Are Medium Earnings Finally Rising Again?
If you’ve been paying attention to Medium’s earnings the past few months, you may have noticed something interesting: after a steep decline of earnings late last year, some writers are now experiencing a renaissance. It was a recent post by one of my fellow writers about their upsurge in earnings that got me wondering if this is the official onset of a trend in 2025.
Earnings Struggle From Late 2024
They were well into the reality of life on Medium in November 2024, when most of them were aghast at what was happening — earnings were falling off a cliff.
Articles that typically produced a good income plummeted to an earning per read (EPR) of just $0.01.
That decline in earnings was largely laid at the feet of fake accounts and spammers gaming the system with fraudulent activity. And it was obvious that by early January 2025, many stunned writers found themselves mired in disappointing earnings despite increasing engagement and reads.
One writer vented, adding:
“My earnings have gone from a steady $0.10 per read to $0.01, and even with more reads, it just wasn’t adding up to income.” It was discouraging.”
